That time of the month always brings some inevitable concerns for women. We're not refering to balancing the budget - more like unbalanced menstrual cycle, leakage problems, cramps, mood swings, choices for the best medication and treatment, etc. When it comes to making the wise selection, ladies face serious health issues in regard to protective aids. Women may choose between sanitary napkins or tampons to retard the overflowing of liquid. Understand the health benefits and side-effects of these methods, before you select what's best for you.

The X Generation: "We live for the moment and disregard any circumstances down the road."

This is what's fashionable with today's youth...and we're helpless to do anything about it. Society can't dictate this new generation's tastes, and any kind of persuasion or lecture will be met with rebellion. And because we can't even appeal to their sense of responsibility or decency, people with higher standards will just have to learn to live with it. We can only deal with it by continuing to advocate stronger moral principles. As with most stubborn teen-agers, a parent's advice goes in one ear and out the other. They are quick to ignore our warnings of being a social outcast, or perils to their health. We can throw all kinds of facts regarding diseases and ramifications that results from their carefree lifestyle, and all our words of wisdom will go out the window. Most young women won't give a darn about impending doom caused by their peer's apathy. Preachings go all for naught, regardless if their carelessness jeopardizes our ecological system, their physical well being, or what's in store for them in the future.

LAWS ARE IN EFFECT AGAINST PUBLIC INDECENCY. THE FASHION POLICE ARE HUNTING THOSE WHO COMMIT SOCIAL FAUX PAS!

It's good to be fashion-conscious, but for longevity... Girl, it pays to be more health-conscious.

Wanton behoviour is reserved for the young, and their concern is only for themselves. It really is their prerogotive, and time is a perspective that is remotely in their conscience. This new generation seems rather selfish. (But perhaps that was the same sentiment of each preceding generation.) So let's deal with it: Since youngsters won't heed the warnings of diseases like toxic-shock syndrome, or not care about being more earth-friendly, then this group is not typically receptive to good advice.
On the other hand; if we use profiling to focus-in on a more receptive group we'll miss the exceptions of any specific social circle we chose to ignore. Not all ladies regularly wear thong panties. Some, who has a more conservative mindset, actually adheres to fashion dos and don'ts. We commend those who are raised with strong moral values. The risk of stereotyping is that we lose the chance to capture the exceptional members of this youthful target market - the ones we can mentor, and sway to think otherwise. It's up to your salesmanship to persuade them to have a lifestyle change. Breakdown the barriers and seek those who show promise. It is definitely a considerable challenge to convince teeners to be mindful of their health and immediate future. Good Luck!

It's difficult to battle the allure of the fashionable g-string for the young ladies out there. Wearing pads is totally out of the question. It's easier for them to conceal the curse with a tampon. We can relate to that and concur with that attitude. Out in public, yeah. But at night time, when you're in bed...

C'mon now, let's all be a li'l more health-oriented. Here's information for them to reconsider the use of tampons:

TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME (TSS)

DEFINITION
Toxic shock syndrome (
no, not a Britney Spears song) is a serious illness that can develop quickly in anyone. It almost always occurs in women using tampons during menstruation, but researchers are still puzzled what exactly causes this. Most people have treatment and get better, but a few don’t. Two or three people die of TSS every year.

THE FACTS
Toxic shock syndrome first came to public attention in the 1970s when thousands of young women began to go to emergency rooms with a common set of symptoms. Those symptoms included high fever, vomiting, peeling skin, low blood pressure, diarrhea, and a rash resembling sunburn. Most of these women had one thing in common: they were all menstruating. And the majority were using a new type of tampon that was labeled "super-absorbent".
The epidemic reached its peak between 1980 to 1984. During that period, in the United States, about fifteen thousand people a year were diagnosed with TSS. About 15
% of those who got the disease died from it.
Doctors were not certain how
toxic-shock syndrome and tampons were related, but it was obvious that some connection existed. Tampon manufacturers were ordered to discontinue the product and upon doing so, the number of TSS cases began to fall dramatically. Since 1998, only about 5,000 cases of TSS are diagnosed annually in the United States - 5% of which are fatal.
For many years, TSS has been thought of as a woman's disease because of the connection between TSS and tampons. And while
toxic-shock syndrome
primarily affects menstruating women under the age of thirty, individuals of either sex, any age, and any race or ethnic group can get the disease.
Most cases reported in the recent past, however, still involve menstruating women under age 30. TSS still occurs in about 17 out of every 100,000 menstruating girls and women each year.
More than half of these cases are related to tampons. Between five and 10% of patients with TSS, eventually die.

CAUSES
The Staphylococcus bacterium, which gathers and breeds in a moist and warm area, releases a toxin (poison) that eventually finds its way into the bloodstream. This toxic substance then causes a nasty infection that is potentially fatal. Researchers are still not certain as to how tampons promote the growth of Staphylococcus bacteria. One theory is that the tampons trap oxygen, which bacteria need to survive. (Oxygen normally is not present in the vagina in large amounts.) If that happens, it can cause a sharp drop in blood pressure, depriving vital organs of nutrients, which could lead to a rapid decline of your health.
Another theory is that tampons provide a warm, moist environment that encourages the growth of bacteria, and users leave them in too long
, or even forget they still have then on. So the nasty germs collect, multiply, and it's 'Mardi Gras' in there! Yet another theory places the blame for TSS on the material of which the tampons were made. Rayon (a synthetic) with tiny strings of plastic can make small lacerations on the vaginal wall, making it more susceptible to infection. This theory suggests that this rough material irritates the fragile lining causing sores that promotes bacterial toxins to enter, via the body's circulatory system.

Toxic Shock Syndrome - Words to Know

Shock:
Your biological state experiencing a sudden drop in blood supply and oxygen provided to the body's tissues.
Staphylococcus:
A class of bacteria found on human skin and mucous membranes that can cause a variety of infectious diseases.
Streptococcus:
Also a type of bacterium that promotes the germination and spread of numerous strains of infections.
Tampon:
A cylindrical, cotton plug inserted in the vagina to absorb fluids released during menstruation.

SYMPTOMS
Toxic shock syndrome begins suddenly with a fever of 102° F (38°C) or more. Other symptoms include vomiting, a watery diarrhea, headache, and a sunburn-like rash, feeling dizzy or fainting, red eyes, muscle aches and confusion. Blood pressure may drop quickly. The kidneys will seriously be affected. When this happens, the patient may become
delirious or go into shock. Later, the skin on hands and feet may peel. If you are experiencing these described symptoms, remove the tampon at once and seek medical help immediately! Be sure to inform the doctor that you were wearing a tampon.

IF IT'S REALLY A MUST...
Most doctors will advice that it is best not to use tampons all the time during your your period. If the patient feels it's a necessity, then they strongly suggest that tampons be worn only during the day and switch to pads at night. Keeping tampons inside you for a long time is playing with fire because they become a breeding ground for bacteria. Be aware of the risk-factors involved
! If there is TSS in your medical history then you should not use tampons ever again.

If your daughter is just starting her menstrual period, she should know about taking these precautions.

Okay, Everyone...Choose Wisely!
